The Authenticity Trap

"Well, that's just who I am."

No. That's who you were.

Right up to this moment it may have been true. Right before you got that feedback it may have been a reasonable self-perception. Not anymore.

Someone who cares about you — imperfect as they surely are and flawed as their delivery may have been — is trying to tell you that you're better than who you thought you were.

Are you the type of person who attacks the messenger? Or are you the type of person who listens, who internalizes that new information and acts on it?

That's who you are.
